BEACH POCCER - ST.KITTS DECEMBER 2007

2pm on a sun soaked beach in St.Kitts in the Caribbean, is there a more perfect setting.

This was the venue of the first ever Beach Poccer tournament.
A quiet beach was soon interupted by the music and bellowing voice of DJ Eddie as he introduced a piece of history.

The tournament soon drew a massive audience as players from the UK, France, Sweden, Romania, Croatia and the US to name just a few.

Our winners were the wonderfully name Ocean's Three and our individual winner was none other than Poccer regular Tom Cairns.

We held an exclusive interview with Tom after the event, here is what he had to say.

Congratulations Tom, how does it feel to be the first ever winner of Beach Poccer?

It feels great and there really couldn't have been a better place to celebrate. Hopefully I'll be able to defend my title next year as it'll mean going back to the CPC :)
Also hopefully it might help us to do a bit better in the next poccer 4 tournament.

Can you recall much of the final table?  What were your tactics?

I can't really remember too much of the final table as it went pretty quickly. I do remember going into the FT in about 3rd and then all of a sudden I was huge chip leader and was getting a great run of cards and getting payed off on them. With 5 left I was very aggressive and was making some very good calls. I got to Heads Up with Rachael who I had chip counted by about 25/1 I think which was a shame as Rachael was on top form the whole of the week and probably would have turned it around with more chips.

What was it like playing poker in the fantastic surroundings of st.kitts?

It was certainly an experience, I've played all 3 previous poccer tournaments in Birmingham which have been amazing but when you're playing in St. Kitts on the table next to a WPT Event final table that is a great experience. And going for a cigarrete break overlooking the mountains and palm trees in warm sunset skies certainly beats standing outside in rainsoaked England :)

Your side have struggled so far in the regular poccer series, why was Beach Poccer different?

I still think we struggled overall as we came near to bottom in the football which was some of the most physical pain i've ever felt playing in that heat but we did good in the poker. In the 1st 2 poccer's we were pretty awful at football but very good @ the poker, and in the last poccer tournament in Birmingham we were terrible at the poker and good at the football which was hard to believe as I thought we had one of our best poker sides.

How did you find the beach soccer element?

Although it was very painful it was a lot of fun. We had a local commentator who I think was called DJ Eddy who was so funny especially his strange laugh. The unpredictability of the ball on the surface was also funny and frustrating but the biggest upside to playing on the beach was running straight into the sea to cool off:)

You have been to all the Poccer events to date, what do you think of them?  Is it something you would recommend?

The poccer tournaments are such a good day out, i've been to all 3 of the U.K. ones and they've all been fantastic, I'd recommend it to any group of mates who enjoy a good day out. You don't have to be great @ football (like us) as you can redeem yourself in the poker and if you don't play poker you will find it very easy to learn and you will have more chips to play with after doing well in the football. The venues really are 10/10, the goals poccer centre is top of the range and the service we receive at broadways casino is excellent from the chefs, bar staff, dealers and of course Clinton and Rachael, for £50 for a day's top class entertainment and enjoyment you can't go wrong and I shall be looking forward to the next event in Birmingham on the 15th March:)

What is your preferred part of the day, football, poker or anything else?

I really like every part of the day, each part I like for a different reason, getting to the soccer centre is always good as I get to see evryone again and am in the mood for  football. Then I love it when the football is over as I'm usually shattered and I love having a beer straight after at their bar. Then I am starving and can't wait to get to the casino and start eating the dinner they provide which has always been really good then when I'm filled up I look forward to playing poker and having a few (too many) beers. There's always frantic conversation at the breaks of the poker as you catch up on your teammates progress and their tales of bad beats and big pots,  but going home is the hardest bit as its such an action packed day I'm always shattered, good job I never drive:)

Do you think you will be able to transfer your form from St.Kitts and Beach Poccer to Birmingham and our next event?

I hope so, I always do well at the football in goal as I'm a keeper and if I can keep as much out of the net as possible we are always likely to score goals as we have some very good players on the pitch. Our strongest aspect is obviously the poker and I feel if we can just creep into the top 50% in the football then we have a great chance, but the angel of helsby have an excellent football side and are also some top quality proven poker players but I think we have a very good chance of being top 3 for the next one:)

Thanks ever so much fo your time, congratulations again on your win and we look forward to seeing you at Poccer 4.
